Strong Interest Inventory (SII)® Assessment

What is the Strong Interest Inventory assessment, and what will it tell me?

The Strong Interest Inventory is an interest assessment designed to assist you in translating your interests into potential career options.  Whether you are looking to change careers, enhance your current career, or identify your first career, the Strong Interest Inventory assessment can help!

The Strong Interest Inventory assessment was revised in 2004, and utilizes 291 items to assess your interests in eight different areas: Occupations; Subject Areas; Activities; Leisure Activities; People; and Your Characteristics.   Based on your responses, the SII presents information about your interests in four categories:

  • General Occupational Themes – describing your interest in six broad interest areas and identifying work environments you may prefer

  • Basic Interest Scales – describing activities you may be interested in

  • Occupational Scales – showing how closely your likes and dislikes match those of satisfied workers in over 120 occupations, and presenting and describing the 10 occupations to which your likes and dislikes match most closely.

  • Personal Style Scales – showing your personal preferences in five different styles of working and living:  Work Style; Learning Environment; Leadership Style; Risk Taking; and Team Orientation.

What should I be careful of when taking assessments on-line?

  • Make sure you are taking the true Strong Interest Inventory, not a look-alike.

When evaluating information on the web, being a careful consumer is essential!  While many other interest tests are available on-line, only the SII instrument has over 75 years of research on its construction, validity, and reliability, ensuring the best accuracy of instrument results.  Kerwin &  Associates uses the Newly Revised Strong Interest Inventory for interest assessment.

  • Make sure your assessment fee includes an interpretation session with a qualified professional.

Because the SII instrument is a psychological instrument, the publisher (http://www.cpp.com/) and the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics require that every administration of the SII include an interpretation session with a qualified professional.  Interest assessments are particularly open to misunderstanding, as they present actual job titles that can be mistakenly viewed as the only career options appropriate for you.  As a result, it is important to work with someone who is skilled in helping you use your results as a starting point, not an ending point. Your SII assessment with Kerwin &  Associates includes a 45-minute personalized telephone interpretation to help you go beyond the job titles to create a job description that is right for you!

  • Make sure you are working with a qualified professional.

Professionals are qualified to administer and interpret the SII instrument by having the appropriate education,   or by attending an approved qualifying program.   All interpretations are conducted by Patrick Kerwin, Qualified SII Professional.
